Med MPA forum 2012
A roadmap for MPA networks in the Mediterranean by 2020!
For the first time in the Mediterranean, about 300 key players in the areas of activity involved in the marine environment gathered to share their experiences and develop a joint program of work to advance the network of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean.
Coming from the 21 countries bordering the Mediterranean and beyond (33 nations represented), representatives of national agencies for the environment, fisheries, tourism and the economy, Marine Protected Areas managers, scientists, non-governmental organizations, regional and international partners, as well as local economic actors, have exchanged from their respective interests towards the common goal of protecting the marine biodiversity of the Mediterranean while contributing to the economical well-being of local populations.
The Forum achieved its ambition to develop a common vision and set a new strategic roadmap
to achieve the goals set forth in the Barcelona Convention, to establish by 2020 a comprehensive, effectively-managed and ecologically representative network of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean.
MedPAN, coordinators of the Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas network and co-organizer of the Antalya forum, is a partner of the Monaco Blue Initiative and contributes to the shared reasoning around marine protected areas. The strategic roadmap developed in Antalya is a strong commitment of key Mediterranean MPA managers and decision-makers and will be widely discussed during the next edition of the Monaco Blue Initiative, which will take place on the 24th June 2013 in Monaco.
